Pets change our lives
Bringing a new pet into our homes can be an incredibly rewarding experience. The companionship, the joy, and the unconditional love they provide can bring a surge of happiness and even boost our mood through the release of dopamine. Those delightful cuddles and the motivation to get outside for walks or socialising are just some of the ways our furry friends enrich our lives.
However, alongside the countless positives, it's important to acknowledge that improper guidance and training can lead to challenges. Without the right approach, dogs may exhibit behaviours that are destructive, frustrating, or unsociable. But fret not! We are here to help you navigate the exciting journey of dog ownership and ensure a harmonious relationship between you and your furry companion.
Why Proper Training Matters
My aim is to empower both you and your dog to have the best possible life together. Just like humans, dogs thrive with structure and understanding. Training not only helps prevent unwanted behaviours but also fosters a deep bond built on trust and communication.
Positive Reward Based Approach
I firmly believe that training should be a positive and enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. My approach is centred around positive reinforcement – a method that focuses on rewarding desired behaviours rather than punishing unwanted ones. This not only encourages your dog to learn quickly but also ensures they associate training with happiness, play and treats.

My Story
Greetings! I'm MaryKay Wren, a passionate dog trainer based in Perth, Australia. My journey to becoming a dog trainer has been a transformative one, shaped by a love for animals, a zest for life, and a determination to overcome challenges.
Originally hailing from the UK, I embarked on a new chapter in 2014 when I moved with my family to the beautiful city of Perth. As a proud mother of four wonderful adult children and happily married to my partner, Matt Wren, my life has been centred around family, adventure, and personal growth.
My lifelong affinity for dogs began at the tender age of 7 when my dad gifted me Bonnie, a spirited Manchester Terrier. This early connection ignited my passion for nurturing the unique bond between humans and their canine companions.
When Matt and I exchanged our vows, we also welcomed our first "baby," Suzie, a lively black Labrador. Our journey together not only deepened our connection as a couple but also ignited my curiosity about dog training. As a team, Suzie and I embarked on a journey of training and companionship that led us to explore new horizons together.
Before my dog training journey, my professional path was diverse and rewarding. From being a computer programmer in the UK to training business automation, I eventually transitioned into disability support work.
In 2019, a pivotal incident left me grappling with PTSD, chronic anxiety, and physical challenges. Determined to reclaim my life, I welcomed "Spirit," my first Shetland Sheepdog. With a vision to transform him into a therapy dog and engage in meaningful outreach, Spirit and I embarked on a transformative journey. Together, we achieved his accreditation with Animal Companions WA Inc and began visiting patients at Fiona Stanley Hospital, spreading joy and healing one wag at a time.
The addition of "Prince," our second Shetland Sheepdog, bolstered our efforts to make a positive impact in our community. Through my involvement with Rockingham Dog Club, I found a supportive community of kindred spirits and my mentor, SueEllen LePage. With SueEllen's guidance, I've pursued numerous online and IMDT training courses, and I'm currently working toward my Cert IV in Animal Behaviour and Training.
Today, I'm thrilled to be a dedicated trainer at Rockingham Dog Club and the RSPCA, utilising positive reinforcement methods to foster strong bonds and desirable behaviours in dogs. As the secretary of Animal Companions WA Inc, I continue to advocate for the power of animal-assisted therapy.
My journey has taught me that every challenge can lead to growth and purpose. I find immense joy in working with my dogs, empowering pet owners, and contributing to the well-being of animals and humans alike. I'm excited to walk the path ahead, one pawprint at a time, sharing the transformative magic that comes with positive dog training.
